Nigel Farage should be given a peerage as swiftly as possible. He has had a bigger effect, for better or for worse depending on your point of view, on the course of British politics and Britain's future direction than any politician since Ted Heath succeeded in taking the country into 'Europe' in 1974.
Mr Farage is as professional a full-time politician as there is. Although never, yet, elected to the Commons he has been a Member of the European Parliament since 1999. He has stood for the Commons on seven occasions, beginning in 1994.
Many who currently sit on the red leather benches in the Lords have done much less to earn it.
A peerage would would make him one of 812 people who currently have a seat in the Upper Chamber - making it larger than the European Parliament which has 751 members.
Becoming a Peer would stop Mr Farage from becoming an MP and put his democratically validated political career behind him. Nigel Farage in the House of Commons would present challenges to the all the main Westminster parties. Lord Farage would be much less trouble.
Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn would display a great degree of canniness if they came together to nominate him.
